Objectives
Learn and apply the technique of oil pastel resist.
Draw and paint a decorated elephant, following the rules of scale.
Brief lesson outline
Week 1
1. Introduce the Kerala culture of painting elephants, and discover its background.
2. Discuss the morality of using animals in art.
3. Show the final piece on the cover page. Teacher emphasises on the scale of the elephant. Discuss why it is important to fill the space on the drawing paper.
4. Draw the elephant using the steps given. Use pencil first before outlining with oil pastels.
Week 2
4. Discuss the meaning of pattern. Show pictures of other decorated elephants to study pattern and to be used as inspiration.
5. Draw patterns on the elephant using pencil first, and then outline with oil pastels.
Week 3
6. Introduce pupils to batik paint. Explain that batik paint will resist the oil pastel. Oil pastel is made of wax, therefore, the batik paint will not stain the oil pastel.
7. Paint the elephant and the background.
Assessment: Informal (Peer feedback)
Use MOE rubrics to give a grading.
Leave comments on whether pupils adhered to rules of scale.
