OVERVIEW
A uniquely interesting art lesson that uses a narrative 'Giraffes Can't Dance' by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees to teach the value of encouraging others and never to give up as there are possible solutions if you look at things at a different perspectives. Pupils will also learn to appreciate the poses that a body can make. This lesson is relevant to the pupils as they learn important values, understand body poses and relate to their science topic on animals.

DURATION
- 1 lesson to draw
- 1 lesson to colour with oil pastel
- 1 lesson to paint and appreciate
TEACHING TIPS
IDEA GENERATION LESSON:
- Spend time to get pupils to pose and appreciate using 'Freeze Frame' drama strategy.
- Talk about the different parts of a giraffe.
- Get pupils to draw the giraffe as big as possible using pencil. Inform them not to shade any parts.
- You may get pupils to use marker to outline first before they colour their work in oil pastel.
- Inform pupils that no oil pastel to be placed on the table after use. It should be placed directly back into the box.
- Demonstrate how to create patterns for their background.
- Prepare a few containers of different blue paint for pupils' use and take turns to use small sponge to colour in the background. This will reduce the cleaning time.
- Or use watercolour cake to paint the background.
SUGGESTED LESSON OUTLINE
- Play a simple game: Do you know your animals?
- Using think-pair-share, pupils will talk about an animal they like.
- Continue to ask questions on the attached PPT.
- Show the title 'Giraffe Can't Dance' and ask pupils if they agree or disagree.
- Show the picture of the book cover 'Giraffe Can't Dance' and illicit 8 questions from the pupils.
- Play the video.
- Talk about the values behind the story.
- Talk about the physical appearance of a giraffe.
- Show them the Art Elegant Task.
- Play a short music and get some pupils to dance and do the final pose. Then 'Freeze'. Talk about the poses made.
- Get pupils to draw and go around to ensure pupils are drawing their giraffe at a suitable size.
- Colour the giraffe after drawing is done.
- Demonstrate how to create pattern for the background using oil pastel.
- Start painting the background.
- Do a gallery walk.
